Lab to Table?

Would you eat meat grown in a petri dish? Well, this isn't some type of sci fi documentary--there have been lots of articles circling online about the future of farming, and recent articles suggest this could soon become reality.

Many of us have made conscious choices to limit meat consumption or to avoid meat from factory farms. We've been advised to get to know our farmers and buy meat from local sources who raise grass fed pastured cows and pastured chickens. Meat-eaters seem to be increasingly more aware of what they are putting into their mouth--and how often. And then there are the Vegetarians and Vegans--eschewing meat because of animal cruelty concerns or for health reasons. We are all doing our best for what works for us and our lifestyles.

Enter lab grown meat. Yes, lab grown. This is what some Silicon Valley startup founders are putting their time and money behind, suggesting we may see these cultured meats, which will be grown from stem cells, as early as 2018. The upside for carnivores and vegetarians alike -- potentially a more positive impact on the environment while not harming any animals and still getting to bite into a delicious, juicy burger. Sounds like a win-win, right?

I don't know about you, but I have been both a vegetarian and an omnivore, and I have to say--this scares me to death! Everyone is up in arms about all the GMO's in our food (understandably), but then we are going to eat lab grown meat? Perhaps it's not genetically modified if it is still 100% meat from the cells of one animal--but is this real food? In it's most natural state? With the whole foods craze in full effect, I have to imagine this will be a tough sell. I'm curious to see how this plays out but in the meantime, I'm curious to hear your thoughts!
